Jenson Button at the start of the year didn't even know whether he was going to have a drive or not with Honda announcing that they wouldn't be competing in the 2009 season because of the global financial crisis. However Ross Brawn who was the team boss of Honda bought it and renamed it Brawn GP. Now using a Mercedes engine BrawnGP kept Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button as their driver for the 2009 season. Jenson Button even took a 50% pay cut to make sure he had a drive for the season which showed Ross Brawn how committed he was. After Button won the second grand prix in Malaysia there were complaints made that Brawn GP were using an illegal diffuser which is the rear part of the floor of the car between the rear wheels and under the rear wing. It is crucial to the aerodynamics, and small changes can have a big impact on downforce - and therefore grip and speed. Brawn GP along with Toyota and Williams were cleared by the International Court of Appeal who ruled that the cars "comply with the applicable regulations".
Button won six of the first seven races which is more then Lewis Hamilton won last year when he became world champion. After the seventh race all the other formula one teams had put in the diffuser in their cars and winning races wasn't Button' s priority. With the likes of Mclaren and Ferrari having faster cars and Red Bull with a cars just as fast Button had to make sure he finished in the points scoring positions to cement his place as world champion. He accomplished this by finishing every race but one which shows the consistency he has produced throughout the year.
However Button didn't do this alone, the brains behind Button's victories and the Brawn GP team is Ross Brawn. Brawn who previously won F1 championships with Bennetton and Ferrari when Michael Schumacher was there not only saved the team from going under but has now led another driver who isn't named Schumacher to a driver's title and a new team to a constructer's title in their first season in formula one.
Ever since he started driving karts 21 years ago Jenson Button has dreamt of becoming formula one world champion and from starting 14th to finishing fifth in the Brazlian grand prix that dream finally came true. Jenson Button now becomes the tenth british world champion and a deserving one at that.
